Natural Hydrogen: the discovery that could change everything.

Can you imagine a clean fuel, naturally present in the Earth, that wouldn’t even need industrial production to exist? Sounds futuristic, right? Yet, natural hydrogen truly exists and is currently generating real interest in the ecosystem of French start-ups.

You may have heard of green hydrogen, the hydrogen produced using renewable energy. But now imagine hydrogen that is already there, buried beneath our feet, ready to be used without polluting. This is natural hydrogen, a clean and accessible energy resource that could transform the energy landscape. And guess what? French Tech is at the forefront of exploring it.

What exactly is natural hydrogen?

It’s simple: natural hydrogen is a form of gas found in certain underground rocks, completely independent of complex industrial processes. It is also called native hydrogen or white, as it is pure and emits no CO2 when used.

What makes it so attractive is that it is a primary energy source, which means it does not need to be manufactured (unlike green hydrogen, for instance). In other words, no energy waste to produce it. It is already there, hidden beneath the surface of the Earth, ready to fuel a cleaner future.

Why is French Tech talking about it so much?

French start-ups are betting big on this technology, and for good reason: natural hydrogen could be the key to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the energy transition. Moreover, France has large deposits of natural hydrogen beneath its feet. So, what can these young companies extract from it?

1. Clean and local energy

Forget polluting energies from overseas. Natural hydrogen is a local energy that does not pollute and is already present in our subsoil. If we can exploit it correctly, it could drastically reduce our carbon footprint while strengthening France’s energy autonomy.

2. A solution for the most polluting industries

Did you know that hydrogen is one of the most promising fuels to replace oil and gas in industrial sectors? Natural hydrogen, even more so, could allow for the decarbonization of industries like steel, cement, or maritime transport, sectors where electrification is not yet possible.

3. Unmatched storage potential

Natural hydrogen could also be ideal for storing energy produced by solar or wind. Because it can be stored in gas form, it would allow for regulating energy production according to needs, compensating for the intermittency of renewable energies.

French start-ups taking on this resource:

Today, several French start-ups are embarking on this adventure, with clear objectives: explore this resource beneath the Earth, extract it in an eco-responsible way, and distribute it effectively.

For example, companies specialized in geological exploration are using advanced mapping technologies to identify the most promising deposits. Others are working on innovative storage solutions, to transport this hydrogen like natural gas.

What are the challenges?

Of course, not everything is as simple as it seems. Natural hydrogen, although extremely promising, involves technical challenges:

  • Exploring without wasting: Locating natural hydrogen deposits remains a complex challenge. It requires cutting-edge tools to accurately map these areas.
  • Costly exploitation: The extraction of natural hydrogen is not yet economically viable on a large scale. For this technology to become feasible, exploration and extraction costs must be reduced.
  • Regulation and acceptance: Like any new technology, natural hydrogen must face strict regulations, and it is essential to reassure the public about its environmental impact.

Is natural hydrogen the future?

If natural hydrogen overcomes these obstacles, it could well revolutionize our approach to energy. It would offer a clean, local, and efficient alternative to fossil fuels. But the path remains fraught with challenges, and French start-ups have a crucial role to play in making it a reality.
