In the south of France, an ingenious and eco-friendly solution heats neighborhoods and public buildings in a way that reduces not only emissions but also costs. In the city of Nîmes, a heating system powered by the combustion of household waste has transformed the way the community warms up. This innovative project, launched in 2015, harnesses the energy from waste incineration to generate heat, making a significant difference for the city’s energy network.

From Waste to Heat: How It Works

At the heart of this project is the Nîmes heating plant, which was modernized in 2015 as part of the country’s transition to greener energy. The plant is connected to an incinerator that burns non-recyclable waste. Every hour, about 14 tons of waste are burned, producing steam that is then used to heat the Pissevin and Valdegour neighborhoods of the city, as well as several public buildings, including the Caremeau University Hospital.

This system not only provides a sustainable alternative to traditional heating methods but also plays a key role in reducing CO2 emissions. By using waste to generate heat, the city has managed to avoid emitting 16,000 tons of CO2 per year. This represents approximately 30% of the CO2 emissions from Nîmes’ real estate, a significant advancement in reducing the city’s carbon footprint.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The environmental benefits of this initiative are clear, but there are also notable economic benefits. The use of renewable energy from waste incineration helps stabilize heating costs, protecting the city from fluctuations in fossil fuel prices. For example, Caremeau hospital saves about €500,000 each year, while the city’s public structures collectively save around €100,000 per year.

In total, Nîmergie, the public service operator behind the project, has invested €9.5 million to connect the city’s heating network to the incinerator. By 2027, Nîmergie plans to expand the system, adding an additional 12 kilometers to the network, bringing affordable and renewable heating to 12,000 more households.
