The resulting steam is then condensed into pure, drinkable water. This method isn\u2019t entirely new\u2014evaporation has long been used in desalination. But what MIT has done differently is design a system that generates continuous water flow using a <strong>passive process<\/strong>. This design mimics the ocean\u2019s natural <strong>thermohaline circulation<\/strong>, where temperature and salinity differences drive water movement.
